24 – IMPLEMENTATION OF TAILINGS RETENTION AND TREATMENT SYSTEMS IN IMPACTED RIVERS
Objective of the program
To construct and operate, in a safe way, sediment containment structures for the storage of the materials removed from the river channels and their surroundings, when applicable, aiming mainly at the gradual reduction of turbidity of the rivers to maximum levels of 100 NTU in the dry season, within a maximum period of three years.

Work on the Axis 1 dam continued, even as the preparatory construction activities for the 2018/2019 Rainy Season.
Work continued on the Axis 1 dam and preparatory activities were initiated for the works for the 2018/2019 Rainy Season.
Underway are the execution of the Axis 1 dam and transport of aggregates for these works.
This month, the following activities were carried out:
● Downstream cleaning on the right shoulder of the dam was completed;
● Construction of the spillway and demolition of the cofferdam channel - activity still in progress.
● Initiation of concrete injection, an important measure for the safety of the Axis-1 foundation. The work is being developed by the construction company Salum;
● The logistics of aggregates are underway;
● Delivery of five piles of laterite.
The contractor Sallum continued their concrete injection and tailings cleaning works during this period. The truckers' strike hampered the aggregate supply.
Construction of the Experimental Landfill was initiated.
The executive projects of the spillway of the Axis 1 Dam, at elevation 820, were revised according to AECOM recommendations.
The State Department of Environment and Sustainable Development authorized the cement injection service in the dam area of Axis 1. This injection will treat the fissures of the terrain, leaving it more stable for the construction of the dam. The company responsible for performing the services began its work.
The cement injection in the Axis 1 dam area was authorized by the State Department of Environment and Sustainable Development (SEMAD) and the company responsible for deploying the services has begun its work. This injection will treat the fissures of the terrain, leaving it more stable for the construction of the dam.
The complementary project for the injection of cement mix by the engineering company BVP is in development. The end date of the current scope is scheduled for next month.
Geocontrol has begun surveying the yards of the households with probes to study the stability, as recommended by the company AECOM. After the surveys the company contracted, Walm, will issue the report of the stability study, scheduled for May.
The company responsible for the renovation of Samarco's cafeteria was hired. The cafeteria will be used by the employees of the Axis 1 dam project, Novo Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu de Baixo, in Minas Gerais.
The elevation of the containment structure of Axis 1 to a height of 843 meters will be decided with the definition of the PRAD (Degraded Area Recovery Plan) solution. A possible elevation to a height of 860 meters was eliminated.
Regarding the already defined scope of the elevation to a height of 820 meters, the executive projects that are being drafted by BVP are being migrated from Samarco to the Renova Foundation, with completion scheduled for February 2018. The contract’s deadline and costs will be adjusted after the migration, with the delivery date of the executive projects set to March 2018.
For the execution of this service, the supply and transportation of the aggregate material began on January 23, 2018. The technical proposals for the execution of the dam were handed over to the Renova Foundation. They have already been technically analyzed and returned to the supply sector. The contracting of the company for this service is scheduled for March 2018.
Due to the postponement of the emission of the TAC for the execution of the dam works, which went from January to February, a Simplified Environmental Assessment was filed requesting the execution of the cement injection service.
The companies listed for the execution of the Axis 1 dam presented their respective proposals. The company that will execute the services will be selected in February 2018.
In parallel, truck scales, which will control the supply of construction materials for the Axis 1 dam, were assembled, installed, calibrated by the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro) and tested with loads.
The scope of the program was defined, considering the construction of the Axis 1 containment structure up to the 820m quota. The definition of height to quota 843m will be made by the State Department of Environment and Sustainable Development (Semad), based on the study of the Recovery of Degraded Areas Program (PRAD) presented by Samarco.
The mandatory cleaning services of the site where the dam of Axis 1 will be built, near the former location of the Fundao dam, have been completed. This stage is very important, since it allows the initiation of the construction of the new dam, scheduled for May 2018.
