Actions aimed at environmental, social, economic, and cultural revitalization will take place in 41 municipalities in Minas and Espirito Santo
Organized by the Renova Foundation, the objective of the Young Leadership Training project is to provide for the transformation and engagement of young people in the reparation process. The initiative contemplates the municipalities along the Doce River Basin as part of the compensatory actions for the collapse of the Fundao dam in Mariana (MG). In all, 1,200 young people, between 15 and 29 years old, will participate free of charge in territorial initiatives aimed at the environmental, social, economic, and cultural revitalization of 41 municipalities affected in Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo.
“The idea of Young Leadership Training is to create opportunities, through educational processes, to promote young leadership and entrepreneurship for new economies, social and socio-environmental issues in the territories,” says Fernanda Carvalho, Education analyst at the Renova Foundation.
The action is developed in partnership with five institutions selected in 2019, through an RFP by the Renova Foundation: Community Center for Culture and Development (CPCD); Geraldo Perlingeiro Abreu Foundation; Integrated Center for Sustainable Development Studies and Programs (CIEDS); Minas Gerais Association of Family Farming Schools (AMEFA); and Lumiar Ambiental.
The institutions were divided over five areas along the Doce River Basin, and each of them developed a project to act respecting these objectives: to mobilize and engage young people in the revitalization of the Doce River; take into account the perception of young people who portray the need and reality of the territory in which they live; provide and increase the participation of young people in ongoing territorial processes conducted or not by the Renova Foundation; contribute to the strengthening of a network of actors and actions that work with young leadership, and to foster online education practices to revitalize the region.
The Young Leadership Training activities started in February and continue to be carried out on schedule, with the stages of institutional articulation with municipal governments and internal planning. In the coming months, the next steps will be mapping and diagnosis. Due to the Covid-19 scenario, it will be executed with virtual tools, with the involvement of society. Youth mobilization is expected to start in September.
The Young Leadership Training project is a compensation action and is part of the Educational Program for Revitalization of the Doce River Basin, in compliance with the Transaction and Conduct Adjustment Term (TTAC). The action was developed in partnership with the Technical Board of Education, Culture, Recreation, and Tourism.
