Residents of Povoação participate in the revitalization of Histórica Street and strengthen local identity

Published in: 09/04/2024

The Mosaic Project encourages community involvement in the revitalization of public spaces and schools, boosting the region’s development.

The community of Povoação, in Linhares (ES), was a protagonist in the revitalization of Rua Histórica, where the district was born, recognized for its strong cultural connection with residents. The street was chosen as the focus of the Mosaic Project, an initiative dedicated to transforming the district, strengthening the local economy and attracting new visitors.

Active community participation was essential at every stage of the project. From the selection of colors and decorative elements, to the execution of the works, residents ensured that the renovation captured and preserved the cultural identity of the district, reflecting its traditions and values.

In addition to Rua Histórica, two municipal early childhood education schools, in Povoação and Regência, were also revitalized. The improvements included renovations to the facades, landscaping, new electrical and plumbing installations, as well as the creation of educational spaces such as reading rooms and play areas. The active participation of parents and children ensured that the changes met the needs of the school community, promoting a more welcoming and functional learning environment.

Local development and cultural appreciation

Since February 2024, the Mosaic Project has restored the facades of 30 properties in the district, in addition to making improvements to landscaping, lighting and installing murals that reflect the rich local culture.

The work prioritizes the hiring of local professionals, strengthening the sense of belonging and stimulating the district’s economy by creating jobs in the region. Architects, bricklayers and electricians from the community were at the forefront of the renovations, which included repairs to walls, window frames and facades, as well as in-depth work to recover local memory, inspired by cultural elements such as Congo and traditional fishing.

The revitalization of public spaces and schools reaffirms the importance of community participation and the promotion of local culture as drivers for the economic and social development of communities affected by the collapse of the Fundão dam.
