One of the main objectives is to ensure the protection of rivers and phreatic zones
Apply the most efficient techniques for soil conservation is an important step to prevent the continuation of erosion processes. This care ensures that, besides the protection of rivers and phreatic zones, the work done by the revegetation fronts will be even more efficient.
To find methodologies that generate the best results, monitoring erosion plots were installed along the Environmental I area, which includes the municipalities of Mariana, Barra Longa, Rio Doce and Santa Cruz do Escalvado in Minas Gerais, and aim to measure the effectiveness of the applied actions.
Four methods will be tested which are already used in the field: sowing grass, sowing fast growing crops; a combination of this with other soil protection mechanisms, such as anti-erosion biodegradable blankets; twigs (mulch); and specific control treatment, called exposed soil.
The expectation is to understand which of these techniques reduces to a greater extent the displacement of sediment by the end of the rainy season, thus to measure the efficiency of the applied practices. We believe that by the first half of April the first results will be collected.
