Traditional Manjuba Festival returns with new format, including three days of activities and best dish competition
The Manjuba Festival in Povoacao, Linhares (ES), is back with a new format. Maintaining the same spirit and cultural identity of the old event, the Povoacao Gastronomic Festival will take place from September 7 to 8 in the events area of the village. The happening will bring together cultural attractions such as fishermen’s stories and concerts, as well as samples of local cuisine and a best dish competition.
The traditional festival used to take place every year in the village until the Fundao dam collapse in 2015. With the ban on fishing and consumption of Manjubas, the event was suspended, but now returns in full force with a new format. The event is organized by the Association of Fishermen and Similar Groups of Povoacao (APAP), with the support of the Linhares Municipal Office and in partnership with the Renova Foundation.
“The event helps keeping our traditions alive. This year, we will show the visitors that even without fish our community has so many alternatives to offer. The community has come together and we are ready to welcome the tourists,” says Andrea Ferreira, one of the organizers.
Between 5,000 and 10,000 tourists are expected to visit the village on the three days of the festival. A representative of the Program Supporting Tourism, Culture, Sport and Recreation of the Renova Foundation, Rafaela Cavalcanti, underscores the importance of the happening for the village and surrounding towns. “The partnership is fundamental for the promotion of culture and the resumption of tourism in the Doce River Mouth region. By strengthening local tradition, it contributes to the generation of income and opportunities for the community,” she says.
