The Renova Foundation is implementing the Mediated Indemnity Program (PIM), initiative aimed at indemnifying those people directly impacted by the collapse of the Fundão dam, property of Samarco Mineração S.A., in Mariana (MG). Its purpose is to promote the indemnification in a transparent manner, with an equal treatment, enabling a more agile result for the impacted parties, without the procedures and costs of a lawsuit.
The initiative is in agreement with the Transaction Term of Conduct Adjustment, signed in March 2016, which named the Renova Foundation as the organization responsible for the reparation programs in the impacted regions.
The indemnities will be defined by means of mediation sessions, which will be attended by a representative of the Foundation, the impacted person, who can be assisted by a public defender or a lawyer, and a neutral, impartial and independent mediator. The Mediated Indemnity Program will have offices all around the region which was impacted directly by the rupture, called the Mediated Indemnity Centers.
Specific enquiries like indemnification amounts, the starting date for scheduling appointments, locations of the offices and further criteria of the program, are in their final phase of definition. This process is being created with the involvement of representatives of the impacted population and technical entities, through dialogue based meetings and participation in the final creation of the damage matrix. The final model of the program will be shared with the population in feedback meetings and with technical and public entities. Shortly after, information regarding the ways to make an appointment, assistance locations and office opening hours, including via the website, will be widely released, accessible to all those interested.
