In January, the Renova Foundation concluded the payment of indemnification agreements for more than 1,600 families and 8 associations.
Beginning last November, the Renova Foundation concluded, in January, the payment of the agreements ratified by the 12th Federal Court, totaling approximately R$390 million. Built from more than 40 meetings and dialogues with the indigenous people of three territories during a year, the agreements cover families from the Tupiniquim-Guarani indigenous community, the Caieiras Velhas II and Tupiniquim Indigenous Territories, in addition to the Comboios Indigenous Territory.
The cases of assistance for indemnification of indigenous people are the result of a General Agreement Term – Indemnification for Economic Damage and Comprehensive Reparation Process, linked to the commitments defined in the Reparation Programs. In addition to the Renova Foundation, indigenous leaders, indigenous associations, the Federal Prosecution Service (MPF), the Federal Public Defender’s Office (DPU) and the State of Espírito Santo (DPES) signed the term.
After the completion of the Impact Studies on the Indigenous Territories of Aracruz, meetings were started with indigenous peoples and Judicial Branch institutions (MPF, DPES, DPU) and a specific and definitive proposal for compensation was defined.
The amounts paid to each family refer to three damages: informal artisan, informal farmer and informal fisherman, following the valuation parameters of the Simplified Indemnity System. The indigenous associations that represent the villagers and have been working on the reparation process were also compensated.
