Actions contribute to reestablishing tourist activity and gives local economy an impulse
The commemoration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in Gesteira, district of Barra Longa (MG), on December 8, had many meanings for the community. Besides the religious character, it was a way to rescue the cultural traditions and strengthen the ties between the residents, who were involved in the preparation of all the details of the festivities in honor of the patron saint. A Mass was celebrated with the participation of the Barra Longa choir, followed by a procession through the streets of the district, with the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, decorated with flowers.
To cherish the culture of the community and to continue a tradition, throughout the month of December a basketry workshop will be held, which uses taquara as raw material, a type of bamboo common in the region. In the hands of artisans, fiber is transformed into baskets, mats and fishing tools. The initiative also contributes to stimulate the commercial potential of the activity and entrepreneurship. Both actions were supported by the Renova Foundation.
