Roberto S. Waack, CEO of the institution, highlighted the challenge of connecting the emergency work with the future, without neglecting the collective construction of solutions
The actions of the Renova Foundation were the focus of the 17th Brazilian Mining Congress, part of the International Mining Exhibition (Exposibram 2017). In the panel “Renova Foundation: the new future of the Doce River Basin”, Roberto S. Waack, the institution’s CEO, presented an overview of the actions implemented to repair the socio-economic and environmental impacts generated by the collapse of the Fundão dam.
Waack stressed that one of the great challenges of the Renova Foundation is the connection of emergency work with the future, without neglecting the collective construction of solutions.
According to the Deputy Secretary of State for Environment and Sustainable Development, Germano Luiz Gomes Vieira, actions have to be convergent. He reinforced that the Secretariat is part of the Inter-Federative Committee (CIF) and, in its presentation, took the opportunity to show the results of the work of the Renova Foundation, such as revegetation and conformation of the tributary banks in the Mariana region. Germano also drew attention to the need to raise awareness among rural producers on the sustainable use of land.
The moderator of the panel, Olavo Machado Júnior, president of the Minas Gerais State Industry Federation (Fiemg), also stressed the importance of common sense observed in the relations between the government and Renova. “No other effort would be as productive as this management model agreed upon for the repair work,” he said.
