Zumba, singing and guitar classes, as well as cooking and handicraft workshops, are among the activities scheduled to take place in Barra Longa (headquarters and district of Gesteira), Rio Doce (headquarters) and Nova Soberbo (district of Santa Cruz do Escalvado). The free workshops and courses are part of the Opening Spaces project, which seeks to value traditional knowledge, culture and recreation in the communities in the territory.
Conceived by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Brazil in the 2000s, Opening Spaces carries out cultural and socio-educational activities in public schools to improve the quality of education for young people and reduce exclusion, vulnerability and violence. Based on the partnership with the Renova Foundation, through the Historical, Cultural and Artistic Memory Program, the initiative was adapted to rescue the traditions and cultural and artistic heritage of the communities affected by the Fundão dam collapse.
“Building dialogue with communities has allowed us to find assertive ways to contribute to the process of repairing cultural references. It is necessary to put the community at the forefront. Therefore, actions are thought out and defined together with residents and partners: Community Center for Culture and Development (CPCD), Saberes do Território Collective, Music and Art Association (AMA) and Semear Group”, explains the consultant in Heritage Education of UNESCO, Marilene Auxiliadora Marinho.
